Preparation of a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty)
For a tummy tuck it is important to choose the right time: If you are planning to lose weight or to get pregnant, it is better to perform the tummy tuck afterwards.
Also if your weight loss or pregnancy is only a few months past you should wait for a retraction of your skin. You should take the tummy tuck into consideration if after one or two years and use of conventional methods your condition has not changed.
What you should do directly before a tummy tuck:
Before your tummy tuck you should discontinue alcohol, smoking and the use of blood-thinning medications in order to support the optimal healing process.
Plan the time after your tummy tuck very carefully. In the first days after surgery you will need help; for at least one week after surgery you will not be able to work, and you should not lift heavy things for two weeks.
Aftercare of a tummy tuck
After a tummy tuck you will need two things above all: peace and patience. Remember that you have undergone major surgery. For the next two weeks your body will claim its right, and you should comply – ideally, take two weeks of rest for recovery.
In the first few days after your tummy tuck you should, even if you can walk upright, maintain a slightly stooped posture to relieve the suture on the hip. Depending on how much tightening has been done, it may be that you will not be able to walk completely upright for the next two to three weeks - your surgeon will inform you precisely about this.
Before completion of the healing process you may have difficulties getting out of bed or sitting up, and even coughing or sneezing may be uncomfortable.
You will wear a special belt or corset for six to eight weeks to keep the swelling of the belly as low as possible and to support wound healing. This compression underwear gives our patients the feeling of "support". Some patients even wear them longer than necessary, which is perfectly fine.
Self-dissolving and non-dissolving threads will be used for the tummy tuck. The non-dissolving threads are removed after about three weeks. Regular follow-up appointments at our Heidelberger clinic proaesthetic provide for optimal control of the healing process.
It may take up to six months until you can see the final results of the abdominoplasty. Even after a hard day, there will be no more swelling, the scars will fade and your new navel will be beautiful and inconspicuous.
